(Jerome Klapka Jerome; Walsall, 1859 - Northampton, 1927) Novelista y dramaturgo inglés que destacó en el género humorístico. Todavía niño, sus padres se establecieron en Londres, donde el muchacho frecuentó el instituto de Marylebone hasta los catorce años. Luego intentó varias profesiones: empleado de ferrocarriles, maestro de escuela, actor y periodista.

En 1889 alcanzó repentinamente la fama con la narración Pensamientos ociosos de un ocioso, seguida el mismo año por Tres hombres en un bote, sobre unos amigos que hacen una travesía por el Támesis en tiempos de la reina Victoria. Con ello revela plenamente su humorismo, justa mescolanza de comicidad, filosofía ligera y anotaciones realistas y descriptivas.

Jerome fundó con Robert Barr y G. B. Burgin The Idler (1892-97), revista mensual ilustrada que obtuvo un notable éxito, y, solo, el semanario To-day (1893-97). De su producción narrativa cabe citar, además, Tres hombres en Alemania (1900), relato humorístico de un viaje a Alemania, y Paul Kelver (1902), novela autobiográfica considerada por el autor como su obra maestra.

Muy aficionado al teatro, en 1886 consiguió hacer representar en el Globe Theatre la comedia en un acto Barbara, a la que siguieron otras; sin embargo, hasta 1908, con El huésped del tercer piso, no obtuvo un éxito real y persistente como comediógrafo. Además de otras muchas novelas, narraciones y comedias, se le debe un tomo de recuerdos, Mi vida y mis tiempos (My Life and Times, 1926).
