EL TRABAJO DE LAS MUJERES EN ESPAÑA (DESDE LA ANTIGÜEDAD AL SIGLO XX) = LE TRAVAIL DES FEMMES EN ESPAGNE (DE L´ANTIQUITE AU XX SIECLE) (BILINGUE ESPAÑOL-FRANCES)

This collection presents a view of female labour history in what is now Spain, and hence also the part they played in the society from Ancient times up to the 20th century. The articles collected here eschew stereotypes to show new aspects, making use of sources that are not normally considered and following a methodology that encourages the formulation of new hypotheses and the reinterpretation of known data from new angles. Thus for example, we find that in Roman Hispania women like the Sevillan saints Justa and Rufina made and sold their own products in the market; in the 19th and 20th centuries there is evidence of women who sought their own identity and independence through their labour; and their evolution from the middle ages to modern times was both complex and rich. In every case, especially over the long term, the labour of women has been crucial for the societies in which they lived, and therefore a knowledge of that labour is essential if we are to understand our past.
