Diana Wynne Jones nació en Londres en 1934, donde pasó su infancia antes de trasladarse con su familia a Essex. Estudió Filología Inglesa en la Universidad de Oxford. Allí asistió a las clases de J.R.R. Tolkien y C.S. Lewis. Su primer libro infantil fue publicado en 1973. Escribió más de cuarenta obras, que han sido traducidas a cerca de treinta idiomas. Gozó de gran prestigio internacional, buena cuenta de ello son los numerosos premios recibidos a lo largo de su carrera, entre ellos el Mythopoetic Fantasy Award for Children ' s Literature, en dos ocasiones (1996 y 1999), o el World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (2007). Su novelaEl castillo ambulantefue llevada al cine por el director japonés Hayao Miyazaki. Falleció en el año 2011 en Bristol.
