Apsley Cherry-Garrard nació en 1886 y se licenció en Oxford en Clásicas e Historia Moderna. Con solo veinticuatro años, era uno de los miembros más jóvenes de la expedición de Scott al polo Sur. Tras su regreso a Inglaterra, Cherry-Garrard combatió en la Primera Guerra Mundial hasta caer gravemente enfermo. Fue durante su convalecencia cuando empezó a escribir El peor viaje del mundo. Más tarde se distinguiría por su activismo a favor de los derechos de los animales. Murió en 1959, a la edad de setenta y tres años.
