En los años que siguieron a esa fecha, mientras que se consolidaba la Guerra Fría, comenzó a emerger lentamente de las ruinas de la II Guerra Mundial una nueva Europa basada en un amplio rechazo al pasado fascista que habia traumatizado la historia reciente del continente. En el Este, este nuevo consenso fue implementado por los regimenes comunistas impuestos por la Union Sovietica. En el Oeste, el proceso fue menos coercitivo, generando mas un consenso de silencio. En ambas zonas, muchas cosas fueron deliberadamente olvidadas u ocultadas. Los años siguientes fueron en muchos sentidos años dorados para la Europa occidental. La democracia se implanto en Alemania y posteriormente triunfaria sobre las dictaduras de España, Portugal y Grecia. Reino Unido y Francia tuvieron que hacer frente a la descolonizacion. Se fundo la Comunidad Economica Europea, que se consolido progresivamente mientras que las economias de Europa occidental se recuperaron de la devastacion de la guerra. Los paises del Este le fueron muy a la zaga y parecieron atrapados en un perpetuo juego de intentar recuperar el terreno perdido, pero incluso alli las condiciones habian mejorado desde el final de la guerra, aunque a ritmo mucho mas lento. A lo largo de todo este periodo, el mundo europeo continuo siendo sostenido por el amplio consenso antifascista surgido tras 1945. Sin embargo, como Dan Stone muestra en esta nueva historia del continente tras la guerra, este consenso comenzo a romperse tras las crisis del petroleo de los años setenta, algo que se aceleraria rapidamente tras el final de la Guerra Fria.
