For the past forty-seven years, the Type Directors Club has encouraged the graphic arts community to achieve excellence in typography through its annual competitions. Typography 22 is the only annual devoted exclusively to typography and presents the finest work in this field for the year 2000. Selected from approximately 3,300 international submissions to the forty-seventh Type Directors Club competition, the 140 winning designs are models of excellence and innovation in the use of type designs. This year's selection encompasses a wide range of categories, including books, magazines, corporate identities, logotypes, stationery, annual reports, video and web graphics, and posters. Additionally, this year's volume features the results of the Club's fourth annual typeface design competition, TDC2 2001, 14 winners out of 135 international entries. In both competitions each winning entry is displayed in fullcolour and is accompanied by complete information about designer, client, typography and more. This edition also includes a special index listing the principal typefaces uses and the names of their designers. The Judges' Choice sections feature the winning entries that have been singled out as his or her personal favourite; these places are accompanied not only by the judges' comments, but also the statements from the designers of the works and the creative process involved in developing it. These components - along with this year's Chairpersons' Statements by Ronn Campisi and John Berry exemplify the enormous vitality of the typography profession today.
