John Meade Falkner
(Wiltshire, 1858 - Durham, 1932). Va estudiar al Hertford College d’Oxford, on es va llicenciar en Història. Després de graduar-se va exercir de mestre a l’escola de Derby, abans d’anar a Newcastle per treballar com a tutor dels fills de Sir Andrew Noble, director de l’Armstrong Whitworth Co., una de les empreses armamentístiques més grans del món al tombant de segle, que esdevindria estratègica durant la Primera Guerra Mundial. Tot i que els principals interessos del jove Falkner eren la poesia, l’arquitectura i l’heràldica, el seu patró li va oferir un càrrec rellevant a l’empresa, pel qual va haver de recórrer mig món. Després de retirar-se dels negocis el 1921, va ser lector honorari de Paleografia de la Universitat de Durham i bibliotecari honorari de la catedral. A banda de les tres novel·les que va escriure, també va publicar diverses guies topogràfiques i una història de Oxfordshire.
