Banine (Bakú, 1905-París, 1992) fue el seudónimo de la escritora Umm El-Banu Äsâdullayeva. Educada en el seno de una privilegiada familia de Azerbaiyán —entonces parte del Imperio ruso—, se vio obligada a huir de su país tras el triunfo de la Revolución bolchevique. En París, mientras trabajaba como traductora, periodista y modelo de alta costura, pasó a formar parte del destacado círculo literario que incluía a figuras como Nikos Kazantzakis, André Malraux o Marina Tsvetáyeva.
