Nacido en Nagoya en 1955. Autor de manga y diseñador de personajes de videojuegos como la saga Dragon Quest. Debutó con la historia corta Wonder Island en la Shônen Jump en 1978, pero el éxito de crítica y público le llegaría con Dr. Slump (1980-1984), adaptada a una serie de televisión. Fue superada a partir de 1984 por Dragon Ball, que se publicó hasta 1995, con una serie de televisión y varios largometrajes y un éxito sin precedentes en la historia del manga, contribuyendo en gran medida a la internacionalización del cómic japonés. Desde 2015 colabora con el artista Toyotarô en la adaptación a manga de la serie de televisión Dragon Ball Super.
