Roger Lewin, tras doctorarse en bioquímica en la Universidad de Liverpool, trabajó durante nueve años para la revista New Scientist en Londres y durante otros nueve para Science en Washington. Autor de varios libros de divulgación científica, Lewin ha escrito junto con el conocido antropólogo Richard Leakey tres obras, la última de las cuales fue Interpretación de los fósiles. En 1989 recibió el Lewis Thomas Award for Excellence in Communicating Life Science.
