Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) es uno de los referentes más destacados de la psicología del siglo xx. Doctorado en Medicina y Filosofía por la Universidad de Viena, fundó la logoterapia, también denominada Tercera Escuela Vienesa de Psicoterapia. En 1942, en pleno apogeo de los nazis, él y su familia fueron hechos prisioneros e internados en los campos de concentración. Fue precisamente esta experiencia la que lo llevaría a confirmar vivencialmente su teoría psicológica (desarrollada en las décadas anteriores) basada en el sentido de la vida y con raíces existencialistas. Tras sobrevivir al Holocausto, fue profesor de Neurología y Psiquiatría en la Universidad de Viena y obtuvo la cátedra de Logoterapia en la Universidad Internacional de San Diego, California. Impartió conferencias en universidades de todo el mundo y 29 de ellas le otorgaron el título de doctor honoris causa. Galardonado con numerosos premios, entre ellos el Oskar Pfister Award de la American Psychiatric Association, fue miembro de honor de la Academia Austriaca de las Ciencias.
