Winston Churchill (Palacio de Blenheim, 1874-Londres, 1965) abandona en el año 1900 la carrera militar para ocupar por vez primera un escaño en la Cámara de los Comunes. Para entonces, ya había alcanzado fama por su huida de una prisión boer y sus trabajos de corresponsal de guerra. Continuó en ascenso hasta 1915, cuando el desastre de Dardanelos pareció acabar de golpe con su brillante carrera. Hasta 1940 no se recobraría plenamente para vivir, en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su hora más dulce, liderando al Reino Unido hacia la victoria aliada. En julio de 1945 sorprendió al mundo al perder las elecciones. Ejerció un segundo mandato en 1951 hasta su renuncia final en 1955. Desde el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial la creación de una Europa unida fue, en palabras de su biógrafo Martin Gilbert, «uno de los tres asuntos que dominarían su pensamiento».
