Located at the crossroads between the study of language, politics and history, in recent years conceptual history has aroused considerable interest amongst a wide range of scholars working in social sciences, philosophy, and humanities. Although there is no doubt that Reinhart Koselleck’s Begriffsgeschichte constitutes a major source of inspiration, conceptual history is practised nowadays in many different ways. The essays compiled in this volume, written by distinguished experts, present a broad panorama of the most important methodological challenges faced by conceptual history today, as well as some more specific contributions regarding the temporal dimension of certain modern concepts. At a moment when time and concepts – and political concepts in particular – are no longer obvious and taken for granted but have themselves become historical matter, this book does not limit itself to an updating of the state of the art; it also offers very useful lessons for the development of future research into this field.

JAVIER FERNÁNDEZ SEBASTIÁN es catedrático de Historia del Pensamiento Político en la Universidad del País Vasco. Está especializado en historia conceptual, un enfoque que ha cultivado y liderado tanto en el ámbito nacional ("Diccionario político y social de España", con J. F. Fuentes) como en el europeo ("European Conceptual History", Berghahn) e iberoamericano (Iberconceptos). Research fellow y profesor invitado en numerosas universidades europeas y americanas, es miembro del consejo de redacción de varias revistas y colecciones internacionales. Como editor ha publicado recientemente los volúmenes colectivos "Conceptual History in the European Space" (2017), con W. Steinmetz y M. Freeden, y "In Search of European Liberalisms: Concepts, Languages, Ideologies", con M. Freeden y J. Leonhard (2019). En la actualidad prepara los volúmenes "Metafóricas espacio-temporales para la historia. Enfoques teóricos e historiográficos" (con F. Oncina) y "Tiempos del derecho, tiempos de la historia" (con J. Tajadura), así como el libro "Key Metaphors for History" para la editorial Routledge.
