Michael Ondaatje nació en Ceilán (hoy Sri Lanka) en 1943 en una familia de origen holandés. En 1962 se trasladó a Canadá, donde vive actualmente. Además de diversos libros de poemas, ha publicado varias novelas, entre las que cabe destacar En la piel del león, Cosas de familia y El paciente inglés (Premio Booker 1992), que fue llevada al cine con gran éxito. El fantasma de Anil, su última novela, ha merecido, entre otros, los premios Medicis, Giller y Governor General por la mejor obra de ficción.
