Renato Barahona

Examining some 350 lawsuits litigated in early modern Basque Spain, Barahona (history, U. of Illinois at Chicago) explores the legal treatment of sexual misconduct. He first examines issues of courtship, seduction, and abandonment as they played out in the courts. The legal discourse of "carnal knowledge" is explored and compared with common discourse. Issues of socioeconomic inequality and gender subordination are examined in relation to sexual coercion and violence. The changing legal treatment of cohabitation is then examined. Finally, legal issues of honor and dishonor by victims of seduction are explored.
