Books by 10 artists who have taught at the Penland School of Crafts (North Carolina) are showcased and, metaphorically, dissected in hands-on sections that demonstrate how the books came to be. The 10 profiled artists in turn chose others who have influenced them, and images of the guest artists' work also appear. Bookbinding and papermaking have been among the school's most consistently popular classes; the volume looks at a range of structures, including pop-up books, accordion-fold books, sculptural books, and more traditionally bound books. The lovely and whimsical pieces are beautifully (and plentifully) photographed. The 10 primary artists are Daniel Essig, Eileen Wallace, Steve Miller, Carol Barton, Susan E. King, Hedi Kyle, Barbara Mauriello, Dolph Smith, Jim Croft, and Julie Leonard.
