Uno scritto di Virginia Woolf del 1913, riprodotto all'inizio del libro, conduce il lettore, con fine sensibilita, dentro la poesia di Donne. Completano il volume un'introduzione di Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), e un apparato di note che risultano indispensabili per districarsi nel mare di riferimenti religiosi del poeta. "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions" is a prose work by the English metaphysical poet and cleric in the Church of England John Donne. It covers death, rebirth and the Elizabethan concept of sickness as a visit from God, reflecting internal sinfulness. BIOTHANATOS ( morir de forma violenta ) fué escrita en 1608 y editada en 1647. Es una obra poco convencional sólo en parte autobiográfica, sobre el suicidio, que acaba siendo un verdadero tratado envolvente y sistematico , una " anatomia del suicidio" a medio camino entre la reflexion vertiginosa y la obsesion por atesorar y dar vuelta a todo tipo de opiniones sobre el homicidio de si mismo.Asi que habla del derecho y de la naturaleza, de las virtudes morales o de la ley de Dios,pues quiere valorar los motivos por los cuales este singular homicida puede ser justificado en la medida que sea

John Donne escribió el Biathanatos en una época especialmente desgraciada de su vida en que el suicidio le tentaba, y entregó el manuscrito a un amigo pidiéndole que "ni lo publicara ni lo quemara". En él Donne, además de formular sus reflexiones morales y teológicas, enumera a los diversos suicidas de la Biblia y de la antigüedad. En palabras de Jorge Luis Borges, Donne considera que "el suicidio es una de las formas del homicidio. De igual manera que no todo homicida es un asesino, no todo suicida es culpable de pecado mortal. En efecto, tal es la tesis aparente del Biathanatos. El declarado fin del Biathanatos es paliar el suicidio; el fundamental, indicar que Cristo se suicidó. Murió de muerte voluntaria, sugiere Donne (Otras inquisiciones). Debido a que su tesis era blasfema, Donne nunca hizo público este tratado, publicado por su hijo en 1647 y que es el primer ensayo de la literatura moderna dedicado al suicidio.
