The novel tells the story of two young English boys, Tom and Peter Scudamore, who are buglers for an English regiment in Portugal and serve with distinction during the hard-fought battles of the Peninsular War, a military conflict between Napoleons empire and Bourbon Spain (assisted by the United Kingdom and its ally, Portugal) for control of the Iberian Peninsula.
