Desconocemos fechas y lugares exactos de nacimiento y muerte e incluso se duda sobre su praenomen. Sin embargo, no hay practicamente ninguna duda de que es uno de los historiadores fundamentales de la literatura latina, gracias sobre todo a dos obras que repasan la epoca imperial desde la muerte de Augusto: Anales e Historias.Este primer volumen de Anales es el relato, año a año, del periodo que va del 14 al 37 d. C., es decir, desde la muerte de Augusto hasta la muerte de Tiberio. La cronica del reinado del emperador Tiberio adquiere en la pluma de Tacito una solemnidad tragica en la que brillan su estilo moderno y meditativo, ademas de sus celebres sentencias lapidarias.

Tácito, genio de la historia que le tocó conocer y vivir de cerca, se formó en el estudio y en la experiencia, en la realidad diaria y en el exámen teórico. Los Anales, compuestos entrre 115 y 117, van de la muerte de Augusto a la caida de Neron, aunque no se han conservado integros. Tacito intenta penetrar en los moviles de la accion del hombre y pinta la terrible aventura del destino de la humanidad. En Tacito se encontro el estimulo de la lucha y el odio a la opresion, puestos los ojos en el respeto a la dignidad del individuo y a las leyes, frente a los poderes de la voluntad despotica. Cada epoca que ha supuesto un avance hacia la libertad humana, ha atraido la atencion hacia ese historiador.
