La manifiesta simpatia de Tacito por los germanos y su conocimiento de este pueblo septentrional adversario de la grandeza de Roma se manifiesta en Germania, estudio etnografico que, por la multitud de datos que ofrece, constituye el documento mas valioso para su conocimiento. Una primera parte se ocupa de aspectos como la geografia fisica, las instituciones, la vida privada y el ejercito; despues se describen las peculiaridades de cada etnia por separado. Tacito concluye que los germanos, a pesar de su caracter primitivo y sus debilidades, aventajan a los romanos en valores que estos han ido perdiendo, como la entrega y el compromiso con la patria. Por ello, ademas de un estudio serio, este breve escrito es una critica indirecta a la sociedad de su tiempo.El Dialogo sobre los oradores refleja el interes que Tacito sintio por la oratoria en su juventud. De raigambre ciceroniana , consiste en el dialogo, situado en el año 75, entre Curiacio Materno, poeta, el orador y abogado Aper y Mesala, experto en retorica, acerca de la decadencia de este arte, que en la era imperial se habia tornado muy inferior al de la Republica; al tiempo que se lamenta esta merma, se aducen posibles causas politica e historicas.

Sin embargo, tambien aspira a entretener, y persigue siempre la variedad en los asuntos y su tratamiento, con una exhibicion de habilidad retorica. Su estilo es original, distinto de todo el resto de la literatura latina. Adopto muchos rasgos estilisticos de Salustio (sobre todo la brevedad) y rechazo el ornato ciceroniano. Sus concisas sententiae se tienen por las mejores de la prosa latina, debido a su excelencia tanto en la forma como en el contenido.
