Nació en 1933 en Zambia, cuando este país era un protectorado británico llamado Rodesia del Norte. Su padre se dedicaba a la ganadería y allí, en el corazón de África, era el dueño de un rancho al que rodeaban más de 12.000 hectáreas de bosques, montañas y sabanas. Creció entre animales salvajes, en un ámbito propicio para imaginar aventuras. Estudió en Sudáfrica, trabajó como periodista y fue contable. En 1964, a raíz de la publicación del éxito de ventas Cuando comen los leones, decidió dedicarse por completo a la literatura. Desde entonces escribió más de treinta libros. Su obra ha sido traducida en todo el mundo y sus lectores se cuentan por millones. Falleció el 13 de noviembre de 2021 en Ciudad del Cabo (Sudáfrica).
