La carrera literaria de Herman Melville (1819-1891) alcanzó su apogeo muy pronto, cuando sus primeras novelas, como Typee, se convirtieron en best sellers. A mediados de la década de 1850, su popularidad decayó drásticamente y, cuando falleció, ya había caído prácticamente en el olvido. Sin embargo, con el tiempo, su novela Moby Dick llegó a considerarse una de las mejores obras de la literatura universal, al igual que Billy Budd, que no se publicó hasta mucho después de su muerte, en 1924.
