Pepi Gal is a girl who is very different to the rest of her family. They all have big heads, make a lot of noise and eat strange foods like fly cakes and beetle cannelloni. Pepi, on the other hand, is tiny and likes traditional dishes like macaroni with tomato sauce.
The book tells the story of Pepi Gal, her travels around the world and the characters she encounters, like Monsieur Lambert, a toad who appears to be a tourist with a spell on him, and Princess Zinzín, who is turned into a toad; years later Pepi discovers that they are a happy couple who have become emperor and empress; Aunt Josefina, a kind witch who turned a rat into her servant? All this, until she meets Tomy with whom she has a son, Tomassoto, who to her surprise looks a lot like the rest of her family. Pepi Gal finally returns home and is reunited with her loved ones, although she keeps travelling...
