Michael Cunningham (1952) es uno de los autores más respetados del panorama de la ficción estadounidense actual. Nació en Cincinnati (Ohio). Se licenció en literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Stanford y en 1990 publicó A Home at the End of the World, su primera novela, cuya adaptación cinematográfica corrió a cargo de Michael Mayer. En 1995 publicó De carne y hueso y en 1999 recibió los premios Pulitzer y PEN/Faulkner por Las horas, una novela que tenía como protagonista a Virginia Woolf y que fue llevada al cine con gran éxito, gracias también al buen trabajo de Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore y Nicole Kidman, quien ganó el Oscar a la mejor actriz. A este texto le siguieron las novelas Días memorables (2005), Cuando cae la noche (Lumen, 2011, 2024) y La reina de las nieves (Lumen, 2016, 2024), así como el libro de relatos A Wild Swan and Other Tales (2015) y el ensayo Land's End: A Walk in Provincetown (2002). Día (Lumen, 2024) es su última novela hasta la fecha y uno de los mejores libros del año según NPR, Harper's Bazaar, Chicago Public Library, Lit Hub, Paste, Kirkus Reviews y Vogue. Ha recibido el Whiting Award y una beca Guggenheim.
