Timothy Edward Ward, Jacqueline Stedall
English scientist Thomas Harriot (c.1560-1621) left his scientific and mathematical findings in a jumble of manuscript sheets that have not been previously published in a form relevant to his method of investigation. Stedall (history of science, Queen's College, Oxford, UK) includes some 140 translated and annotated of the sheets concerned with the solution and structure of polynomial equations. In her introductory essay she explains the importance of the work to mathematics, discussing which contributions were new and how it relates to the works of such figures as Viènte, Warner, and Torporley.
