Christopher Morley (1890-1957) nació en Haverford, Pensilvania y estudió en Harverford College, donde su padre trabajaba como profesor de matemáticas. Posteriormente, se matricularía en la universidad inglesa de Oxford para estudiar historia moderna durante tres años (época que contaría en su novela autobiográfica de 1931 John Mistletoe). En 1913, de vuelta en Estados Unidos, se instaló en Nueva York y comenzó a trabajar en la editorial Doubleday. Pocos años después se convertiría, recorriendo Estados Unidos como columnista y reportero, en uno de los periodistas más prestigiosos de su época.
Su primera novela, La librería ambulante (Periférica 2012), fue publicada en 1917; en 1919 apareció su continuación, La librería encantada. Una de sus obras más conocidas, Kitty Foyle, fue publicada en 1939 y trasladada al cine con el mismo título (en España como Espejismo de amor); su protagonista, Ginger Rogers, obtuvo un Oscar por su papel como Kitty.
Inteligente, lúcido y sofisticado, fue un escritor de éxito y al mismo tiempo un escritor de culto. Se ha dicho de él, comparándolo con Noel Coward, que su refinamiento era indudablemente británico. Sutil humorista, dijo de sí mismo que amaba tanto a Shakespeare como al Conan Doyle de las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes. Sin embargo, sus dos grandes maestros fueron compatriotas suyos: Walt Whitman y Mark Twain.
