Donald Ray Pollock nació en 1954 y creció en Knockemstiff, Ohio, escenario de este primer y celebrado libro de relatos. Durante más de treinta años trabajó como peón en la fábrica de papel Mead Paper Mill, hasta que decidió apuntarse a un programa de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Ohio, del que se graduó a los cincuenta y cinco años. Los relatos de Knockemstiff (2008) y su primera novela, El diablo a todas horas (2011), fueron unánimemente aclamados por la crítica y traducidos a varios idiomas. En 2009 le concedieron el PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize y en 2012 fue becado con el Guggenheim Fellowship. El banquete celestial es su última novela.
