With its frequently optimistic tone and obsessive attention to detail, White's art offers a convincing landscape of the imagination. Here are elaborate spaceships gliding through black skies illuminated only with bursts of starlight; planetary surfaces covered with ice and topped by chilly, cloudless blue skies; a whimsical representation of the Bermuda Triangle; and a strange and compelling metal butterfly with an appearance both delicate and high-tech. In Waiting to Hear from William even the seemingly normal country scene of a house in a flower-filled field is oddly disquieting, with its yellow light and fragmenting dandelions.
