Cathi Unsworth nació en Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, y desde muy joven fue seducida por el lado oscuro de la mano de autores de literatura de terror como Dennis Wheatley y recibió el temprano influjo de las nuevas bandas de finales de los setenta que un "médium llamado John Peel" empezó a pinchar desde BBC Radio 1, "cuyos rasgos distintivos eran guitarras como machetazos, envolventes teclados de feria, líneas de bajo trepidantes y percusiones que recordaban al estrépito de un martillo neumático o a una procesión de patitas de insectos". Unsworth comenzó su carrera en el legendario semanario musical Sounds a la edad de diecinueve años, plataforma que le permitió conocer y entrevistar a muchos de los protagonistas de este libro. Ha escrito varias novelas de género negro que rezuman cultura pop, entre las cuales está "Bicho raro", traducida al castellano, y sus artículos han aparecido en The Guardian, Financial Times, Bizarre, Melody Maker, Mojo y Uncut. Su anterior libro, "Defying Gravity: The Life and Times of Punk Icon Jordan", fue elegido Libro del Año de 2019 por Rough Trade, Uncut y el Daily Telegraph. Ha aparecido en televisión y radio, ha dado charlas, ha organizado paseos y ha sido anfitriona de numerosos eventos. Vive en Londres.
