Melvin Burgués nació en Londres en 1954. Al acabar la escuela empezó a hacer unas prácticas como periodista, pero después tuvo numerosos y variados trabajos, la mayoría en la construcción. Empezó a escribir cuando tenía 20 años y 15 años después publicó su primer libro: El llanto del lobo (The cry of the wolf). En 1997 recibió el Guardian Award y la Carnegie Medal por la poderosa novela Junk.
