John Rapley es un economista político especializado en desarrollo global, economía mundial e historia económica, y su vocación, y su vida, navegan siempre en la frontera entre la teoría y la práctica. Nacido, criado y educado en Canadá, inició su carrera académica en el departamento de desarrollo internacional de la Universidad de Oxford. Decidido a sumergirse en su tema de investigación, pasó las siguientes dos décadas de su vida en países en desarrollo, para acabar creando el think tank Caribbean Policy Research Institute. Tras ayudar a algunos gobiernos a sortear la crisis financiera de 2008, regresó a Gran Bretaña y se instaló en la Universidad de Cambridge para impartir clases en el Centro de Estudios sobre Desarrollo. Después, retomó la vida de escritor, y ahora divide su tiempo entre Europa, Canadá y Sudáfrica, donde es investigador principal en el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de Johannesburgo, junto con Corea del Sur, donde es profesor visitante en el Instituto para el Alivio de la Pobreza y el Desarrollo Internacional de la Universidad de Yonsei. Sigue ejerciendo el periodismo, tras una larga y variada carrera en la que ha entrevistado desde primeros ministros y multimillonarios en sus islas privadas hasta capos de la droga y víctimas de la esclavitud sexual. Entre sus libros figuran Understanding Development (1996), que sigue utilizándose como libro de texto en los estudios sobre el desarrollo, Globalization and Inequality (2004)m Twilight of the Money Gods: Economics as a Religion and How it all Went Wrong (2017), y ¿Por qué caen los imperios?
