Nació en Toronto (Canadá) en 1950, y se dedica a la enseñanza de griego antiguo. En 2020 recibió el Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Letras. Ha publicado varios volúmenes misceláneos de poemas y ensayos, como Cristal, ironía y Dios y Decreación, la obra de teatro en verso Norma Jeane Baker de Troya, el ensayo Economía de lo que no se pierde, el diario de viaje Tipos de agua, sus anotaciones sobre la lectura de En busca del tiempo perdido (Marcel Proust) y recopiladas bajo el título Albertine, su traducción de Safo en Si no, el invierno y el libro-objeto NOX, todos ellos publicados por Vaso Roto.
