Michel Tournier estudió en varios colegios, terminando el bachillerato en el Instituto Pasteur. Se licenció en Filosofía en La Sorbona y continuó estudios de esta disciplina en Tubingen. Ha trabajado en la radio y televisión francesa y ha colaborado en prestigiosos periódicos como Le Monde y Le Figaro. Desde 1972 es miembro de la Academia Goncourt. Comenzó a publicar a los cuarenta y tres años.

Autor de ensayos, relatos cortos y novelas, está muy influenciado por la cultura germánica. Su temática es variada aunque predomina la fantasía y mítica, recreando viejas historias destinadas a público joven y adulto. Recibió varios importantes premios como el Goncourt de novela en 1972 o el Grand Prix de la Academia Francesa en 1967.
