Considerado de forma unánime el máximo poeta de Estados Unidos, Walt Whitman (1819-1892) es el supremo cantor del Yo y de la naturaleza, del cuerpo y del alma, de la igualdad del hombre y la mujer, de las delicias del sexo, de la fraternidad y la democracia. Profundamente renovadora en cuanto a forma y contenido, su obra suscito una oleada de entusiasmo y controversias. Specimen Days is a series of diary entries about Whitmans life, from his boyhood days at Rockaway Beach, to his nursing days in Washington D.C during the Civil War, and finally to his time in Camden New Jersey. His account of the Civil War Hospitals is painful to read, but his kindness and ministrations to the wounded soldiers (writing them letters home and giving them horehound candy) are really touching. He estimated that visited between 80,000 and 100,000 young men. My great grandfather was in one of those hospitals, so I like to think that Walt stopped by to give him some candy and talk. After the war, Whitman came down with an illness and was partially paralyzed. He moved to Camden and spent his afternoons outside in nature. He attributes his rebound in health to this time and wrote many essays about the outdoors and the nature around him.

Walt Withman empezó este diario a fines de 1862, en pleno fragor de la guerra de secesión que asoló los Estados Unidos de América. Ninguna como ésta, por la empatía y el apego que demuestra su traductora para con el espiritu y el texto original whitmanianos. Walt Whitman worked as a nurse in an army hospital during the Civil War and published "Drum-Taps," his war poems, as the war was coming to an end. Later, the book came out in an expanded form, including "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," Whitman's passionate elegy for Lincoln. The most moving and enduring poetry to emerge from America's most tragic conflict, "Drum-Taps" also helped to create a new, modern poetry of war, a poetry not just of patriotic exhortation but of somber witness. "Drum-Taps" is thus a central work not only of the Civil War but of our war-torn times. But "Drum-Taps" as readers know it from "Leaves of Grass" is different from the work of 1865. Whitman cut and reorganized the book, reducing its breadth of feeling and raw immediacy. This edition, the first to present the book in its original form since its initial publication 150 years ago, is a revelation, allowing one of Whitman's greatest achievements to appear again in all its troubling glory.
