A los 32 años se establece en Inglaterra y comienza a escribir su larga obra como novelista, naturalista y memorialista. La obra de Hudson más apreciada la constituyen los relatos inspirados en su etapa americana: Allá lejos y tiempo atrás (Acantilado, 2004) y sus novelas La Tierra purpúrea (Acantilado, 2004) y Mansiones verdes (Acantilado, 2006). Como naturalista y ornitólogo dejó una copiosa bibliografía.
