Romain Gary Nascut a Lituània, sota domini rus, el 1914, fuig a França amb la seva mare. Estudia Dret. Lluita a la Segona Guerra Mundial amb l'exèrcit aliat. Treballa per al servei diplomàtic francès i viu a Europa i Amèrica. És un dels escriptors francesos més prolífics i controvertits, amb obres signades amb el pseudònim Émile Ajar --com ara La vie devant soi (1975), que rep el premi Goncourt, enmig d'una polèmica sobre la identitat del seu autor. També va escriure Éducation européene (1945), Les racines du ciel (premi Goncourt, 1956), La promesse de l'aube (1960), el recull Gloire à nos illustres pionniers (1962), Lady L (1963), Chien blanc (1970), Gros-Câlin (1974), Pseudo (1976) i L'angoisse du roi Salomon (1979). Gary se suïcida el 1980.
