Maya Angelou (Marguerite Annie Johnson) nació en San Luis, Misuri, en 1928 y pasó la mayor parte de su infancia con su abuela en una zona rural de Arkansas. A los dieciséis años dio a luz a su primer hijo; para ganarse la vida, trabajó de cocinera y de camarera y tuvo que ejercer la prostitución. Durante la década de 1950 actuó en clubes nocturnos e inició una carrera de éxito como cantante, bailarina, actriz, directora de revistas y escritora. Tras viajar por Europa y África se convertiría en una importante figura del movimiento por los derechos civiles. En 1969 publicaría Yo sé por qué canta el pájaro enjaulado, el primer volumen de su autobiografía, una serie de siete libros que la han hecho mundialmente famosa y que junto a su poesía constituye lo más valorado de su obra literaria. Durante el resto de su vida continuaría alternando la literatura con distintas colaboraciones teatrales, musicales, cinematográficas y televisivas, ya convertida en una de las figuras más conocidas de la comunidad afroamericana. El resto de su autobiografía lo forman los libros Encontraos en mi nombre (1974), Singin’ and Swingin’ and Gettin’ Merry Like Christmas (1976), The Heart of a Woman (1981), All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes (1986), A Song Flung Up to Heaven (2002) y Mom & Me & Mom (2013). Murió en 2014 en Winston-Salem (Carolina del Norte).
