William Trevor (1928-2016) fue artífice de una sólida obra literaria en la que se alternaron la novela y el relato de forma natural. Creció y se educó en la Irlanda rural antes de ingresar en el Trinity College, en Dublín. Trabajó como escultor hasta 1960 y más tarde se convirtió en un excepcional novelista y, según la opinión general, es el mejor escritor de relatos en lengua inglesa. Recibió numerosos galardones, entre ellos el Premio Whitbread por El viaje de Felicia y el prestigioso Premio David Cohen de la Literatura Británica en reconocimiento a toda su obra. Además de este volumen de relatos, Salamandra ha publicado en castellano dos novelas, La historia de Lucy Gault y Verano y amor.
