Sue Black es una de las principales anatomistas y antropólogas forenses del mundo. Vicerrectora en la Universidad de Lancaster y reconocida académica, fue la principal antropóloga del equipo de trabajo forense británico en las investigaciones de los crímenes de guerra en Kosovo y una de las primeras forenses en viajar a Tailandia después del tsunami del océano Índico, en 2004, para ayudar a identificar cadáveres. También ha prestado sus servicios en Sierra Leona, Granada e Irak. Ha recibido dos reconocimientos policiales por su trabajo para ayudar a asegurar condenas contra perpetradores de abuso sexual infantil. Asimismo, es un rostro familiar en los medios de comunicación: se han filmado documentales sobre su trabajo, y dirigió la exitosa serie History Cold Case de la BBC Two. En 2016, fue nombrada Dama Comendadora de la Orden del Imperio Británico por sus servicios en educación y antropología forense. Es miembro de la Royal Society of Edinburgh, de la Royal Society of Biology y profesora vitalicia de Anatomía de la Royal Scottish Academy.
