Gene Luen Yang escribe, y a veces dibuja, cómics y novelas gráficas. Como quinto Embajador Nacional de Literatura Juvenil de la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos, defiende la importancia de la lectura, especialmente una lectura con perspectiva de diversidad. Su novela gráfica American Born Chinese, finalista del National Book Award y ganadora del Printz Award, ha sido adaptada a una serie de streaming.
