John Irving (Nou Hampshire, 1942) és un dels escriptors nord-americans amb més projecció internacional. La seva carrera literària va començar el 1968 amb Setting Free the Bears, obra amb què va rebre una beca de la Fundació Rockefeller. Deu anys més tard, la novel·la El món segons Garp, guardonada amb el Premi Nacional del Llibre, va significar la seva consolidació com un dels grans autors contemporanis. Obres seves posteriors com Una dona difícil o La quarta mà han estat comparades amb la literatura del clàssic Charles Dickens. Amb motiu de l’adaptació al cinema de la seva novel·la Prínceps de Maine, reis de Nova Anglaterra, Irving va rebre l’Oscar al millor guió adaptat. L’última nit a Twisted River i En una sola persona són les seves darreres novel·les, totes publicades en català per Edicions 62.
