Terency Hanbury White (1906-1964) nació en Bombay, India y se educó en el Queens College, Cambridge. Tuvo una niñez infeliz; «mis padres se odiaban», escribiría más tarde y creció hasta convertirse en un solitario, con un profundo conocimiento del folclore y la mitología y un tremendo entusiasmo por la pesca, la caza y volar (actividad que emprendió una vez superó su miedo a las alturas). White fue profesor de escuela hasta el éxito que conoció en 1936 su libro England Have My Bones, un libro sobre aventuras en la campiña y en la naturaleza, que le permitió dejar su trabajo y dedicarse a escribir a tiempo completo. Junto con El azor, White fue autor de veintiséis libros, entre ellos su famosa tetralogía artúrica Camelot. Murió en el mar Egeo, de regreso de un viaje, cuando entraba en el puerto de El Pireo, y está enterrado en Atenas.
