Written in February 1922, Rilkes Sonnets to Orpheus is one of the great poetic works of the twentieth century. The poems were written in memory of Vera Oukama Knoop, the daughter of two of Rilkes friends, who died tragically at the age of eighteen. In his wonderful translation, Willis Barnstone brings an approach honed through years of work on the underlying philosophy of translation, about which he has written extensively.
