The literary style is imbued with psychological insight, revealing the internal conflicts and desires of the protagonist as she navigates her personal and social dilemmas. Arnold Bennett was a prominent figure in the late Victorian and early Edwardian literary scene, known for his keen observations of industrial life and the challenges of modernity. His background in the pottery industry and his experiences in Bursley deeply informed his storytelling, allowing him to authentically portray the aspirations and struggles of his characters.
