La carrera literaria de Herman Melville (1819-1891) alcanzó su apogeo muy pronto, cuando sus primeras novelas, como Typee, se convirtieron en best sellers. A mediados de la década de 1850, su popularidad decayó drásticamente y, cuando falleció, ya había caído prácticamente en el olvido.
